Russo: To be a star, you have to look like a star
I’ll give props to Russo, he’s a legitimately funny guy with a pretty awesome series of podcasts and a rightful place in wrestling history, but it sometimes astounds me that he has large chunks of history seemingly removed from his brain.
For every Hulk Hogan, there was a Roddy Piper.
For every Macho Man Randy Savage, there was a Ted DiBiase.
For every Stone Cold Steve Austin, there was a Shawn Michaels.
For every Rock, there was a Chris Jericho.
For every Triple H, there was a Mick Foley.
For every Brock Lesnar, there was an Eddie Guerrero.
Arguably, those that have connected most with the crowd in the last 5 years haven’t been the big boys, it’s been the Daniel Bryan’s, the CM Punk’s. Roman Reigns is universally booed (unfairly, but creative aren’t turning him heel, so they get what they deserve at this point) while someone like Dean Ambrose was universally cheered
The idea that a Sami Zayn ( very similar build to early Shawn Michaels / Edge / Jeff Hardy ) shouldn’t be taken seriously solely due to his physique, or that Kevin Owens ( Nikita Koloff, Iron Shiek, Sgt Slaughter, Kamal ) can’t be taken seriously as a prize fighter.
It’s further made problematic when Russo openly flaunts his lack of knowledge around real fighting, very few fighters carry that amount of muscle into the ring and have any effectiveness. If his argument is that “Kevin Owens doesn’t look like a prize fighter”, then I guess we can remove Mark Hunt and his accomplishments (K1 Grand Prix champion, Top 10 in UFC for a number of years) or Roy Nelson, or Travis Browne, or BJ Penn.
Either Russo enjoys trolling the community (which I think is certainly true) or he’s got spots on the brain that stop him recalling that “the average man” has had a lot of success in the WWE. They’re not all 6’6, 300lb mountains.
