Rocky Romero Praises New Iteration Of ROH For Mixing Older And Younger Talent

Rocky Romero is having a great time in Ring Of Honor.

Romero has been a consistent part of ROH programming in recent weeks, mainly appearing in tag team matches with Trent Beretta.

Speaking with Fightful’s Sean Ross Sapp for a new interview, ‘Azucar’ talked about the current version of the company and how it can be better than television wrestling sometimes.

“Obviously I go back with the ROH brand ’til like 2005 or 2006. So I’ve been multiple time, ROH Tag Team Champion. It’s always been my home away from home, you know? Whenever I was gallivanting away from New Japan, I would always come and hang out in ROH for a bit and work there. For me, it’s cool to be in this new reiteration of ROH and I’m happy too, because now I feel like it’s really about a lot of young talent. It’s like older talent and young talent meeting together. So I think that there’s a lot of things that I can do to help not only backstage, but on the show as well, me and Trent, being the more veteran tag team in the company. So for me, it’s cool. Plus what’s cool is we have time. When you’re TV wrestling, it’s all about time, but Ring of Honor being streaming, we get a little more leeway and it’s a little more fun for us, I think. AEW doesn’t have house shows, but we have ROH, so that’s another way to be creative and be different without having the stress of being on television.”

Romero went on to say that ROH is a good place for talent to get reps in or try some new stuff out.

“Super important, super, super, super important. I think what’s cool too is you don’t know who’s gonna come in and out each taping, right? So we’re doing the tapings now in Jacksonville. There’s tons of talent who are on TV or maybe coming back from an injury or something and they’ll say like, ‘Hey, can we do ROH on Monday? Because we’d love to get like some reps in.’ Because they know they can come and wrestle 15 minutes without the heavy stress of television, like I said, or trying stuff out. So I think it’s a good place for people to work things out as well. Like you said, there’s no live events and you need to have that sometimes as a wrestler and to work things out and get reps.”

Continuing on, Romero compared the situation to Dave Chappelle trying out some new comedy bits.

“I feel like it’s like stand up comedy when you see Dave Chappelle going to the Comedy Store and he just starts talking. He’s got a little bit of material. He’s got some stuff he wants to try out. But you’ve got to try it out in front of an audience. You can practice it all you want in some sweaty gym somewhere, but it’s still not the same thing until you get out there in front of an audience. So I think for ROH, for some of the veterans that this is that. Plus one thing about AEW backstage is that there’s a lot of people who want to work with young talent and give knowledge, things that through trial and error of some of these wrestlers who have 15, 20 years behind them. You figure a lot of things out slowly sometimes and you want to spread that knowledge and help the next generation because that’s who’s going to be helping us. When I’m older and I’m completely backstage at one point, which will happen probably sooner than later, I want to be able to help the people who are in front of the camera, who is drawing the people in. I think that that’s important.”
